1977 Harley Davidson XR750
The successor to the KR model, the XR750 dominated flat track racing from 1970 until the
present. Producing 90 bhp @ 8,000 rpm, this model featured twin Mikuni carburetors and
alloy cylinder heads. This bike was ridden by Grand National racer, Davey Durelle.

This 1972 Alloy XR750, ridden by amateur Chubby
Armour of Denver Co., was one of the first alloy XR's to see track action after being
released from HD Racing Dept. to their Dealers who had Racers w/credentials. If you were a
Hotshoe you got some of the 1st ones released in the summer of 72

Juniors (amateurs) at one time were required to have restrictor plates on their XRs which limited their Carb Venturi opening to 25 mm (1 inch). Picture circa 1980 - Sturgis S.D.

Mike Collins and his National #39 XR.
This is a good shot of the huge
38mm Mikuni Carbs. This was a mile track XR and a lot of the racers would run the larger
38mm carbs instead of the standard 36mm Mikunis. Mikuni Carbs worked flawlessly on the XR
and made tuning much simpler in the intake dept. Case in point, Mike won both days at
STURGIS 1/2 MILE with this bike.

Yes you are seeing right. Ronnie Rall had the heads on his
alloy XR machined to have the Mikuni Carbs on the left side of the engine where
normally you would see the exhaust pipes exiting.
Ronnie Rall was a well known veteran National DT Racer from Ohio who carried National #52 for many years.

A picture of Kevin Atherton (national #23) on his XR750. He had to wear that gizmo on his leg for months resulting from a disastrous crash at DuQuoin which took the life of fellow racer Davy Camlin. Atherton recovered enough to ride in the 2000 Springfield event but crashed after someone left oil on the track. Fortunately he wasn't hurt. He hopes to be able to compete in the 2001 season. Lets wish him luck.
